HOUSTON- A woman was fatally hit by a drunk driver while trying to help her daughter and granddaughters who ran out of gas in southwest Houston on Saturday night.
According to the the Houston Police Department, the fatal car accident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on U.S. Highway 59 at West Bellfort Avenue.
Police said a woman with her two children were driving a Nissan car inbound on the Southwest Freeway when they ran out of gas and moved into the emergency lane.
The woman called her step-mother to bring gas for her stalled car. After she arrived, the family was standing outside the car to put the gas in it when a drunk driver in a Mercury Grand Marqe clipped the front end of a van and slammed into the back end of the step-mom's Nissan.
HPD said this pushed her car into her step-daughters Nissan placing the step-mom in between the two cars.
The step-daughter and 15-year-old old daughter were both struck, but her 9-year-old son managed to jump out of the way.
The entire family was transported to the hospital, where the step-mom died.
The mother of the two children is in serious condition, but is expected to survive. Her 15-year-old daughter had minor injuries.
The drunk driver was treated for minor injuries and arrested. He faces intoxication manslaughter charges.
