A crash on the Beltway near the Mixing Bowl has left a man dead and another man with life-threatening injuries. It happened Saturday afternoon in the Inner Loop.

Virginia State Police said a pickup truck towing a boat had pulled off into the median. Two men-- Leonard Schultz, 52, and Albert Schultz IV, 24-- were outside the vehicle resecuring the boat when a box truck drifted into the media.

The truck hit the boat and Leonard Schultz. Albert Schultz was also hit as a result of the crash.

Both men were taken to a hospital. Leonard Schultz passed away.

Leonard was the uncle of Albert. Albert's father was in the pickup truck at the time of the crash. Leonard also was a beloved football coach and teacher at James Madison High School in Vienna, Va.

The box truck driver, Carlos Garcia, of Woodbridge, Va., wasn't hurt in the crash. At this time, he's charged with reckless driving.

The crash happened on I-495 in Springfield, just east of where the Beltway intersects with I-95 and I-395, known as the Mixing Bowl.

It shut down the Inner Loop for several hours while police investigated.
