WASHINGTON (WUSA*9)--If you want to vote in the upcoming general election, which is November 8, make sure you are registered. Voter registration deadlines are quickly approaching in DC, Virginia and Maryland.

District of Columbia Voter Registration Information

The deadline to register via mail or online is Tuesday, October 11. However, residents can register in person on November 8. According t the DC Board of Elections website, "There is no registration deadline in person, you may register and cast a special ballot on Election Day." For more information click here.

To register by mail you must have either a Driver's license number or a DMV- issued ID number or a social security number. When registering for the first time by mail you will additionally need to include a copy of one of the following:

  • A copy of a current and valid government photo identification
  • A copy of a current utility bill
  • A copy of a current bank statement
  • A copy of a current government check
  • A copy of a paycheck
  • Other government document that shows the name and address of the voter

  • The voter registration application can be mailed or hand-delivered to any official registration office.
  • If mailed, the application must be postmarked no later than the deadline.
  • If delivered in person, either by the applicant or a third party, the application must be received by the deadline. On the final day of registration for an election all general registrar offices close at 5:00 p.m.
  • Applications postmarked or received after the deadline will be held and processed after the election.
  • For questions concerning completing the application and voting on Election Day, call your local registration office

Maryland Voter Registration Information

The deadline to register online or via mail is October 18th. Marylanders can also register to vote in person during early voting which is October 27-Nov 3.

You can use Maryland's Online Voter Registration System (OLVR) to register to vote or, you may complete a voter registration application in person at:

  • Your local board of elections;
  • The State Board of Elections;
  • The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene;
  • The Department of Social Services;
  • The Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA);
  • Offices on Aging;
  • The MTA Paratransit Certification Office;
  • All public institutions of higher education;
  • Recruitment offices of the U.S. Armed Forces;
  • Marriage license offices; and
  • Offices for students with disabilities at all Maryland colleges and universities.
