WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Several people from Senator Murphy's state have been fighting for increased gun safety since a shooting killed 27 people, including 20 children.
Parents and loved ones involved in the Newtown shooting in 2012 were in D.C. fighting for safety and supporting Orlando.
Those families say they thought for sure after the shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary that something would happen. Now that nothing has, they just keep fighting.
Bill Sherlach is painfully familiar with a loss like the mass shooting in Orlando.
His wife Mary went to work one morning and never came back.
Mary Sherlach was the school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT the day 27 people, including 20 children, were shot and killed.
Mary was gunned down while trying to protect those students. Sherlach said you never get used to that kind of loss.
Today, Sherlach puts that grief to work along with other families of the Newtown victims through Sandy Hook Promise. It's a group dedicated to preventing gun-related deaths.
At a Sandy Hook Promise fundraiser in the District Wednesday night, an emotional Vice President Joe Biden was in disbelief.
"You would've thought that several years later that on matters relating to rational gun safety, we would've made some progress by now," said Biden.
