WHEATON, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Wheaton man and woman have been charged with murder in the death of their two-year-old son.
Jonathan Navarrete-Turcious and Blanca Rosa Reyes, both of the 11800 block of Charles Road in Wheaton, Md., were arrested Thursday and charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree murder in the death of their two-year-old son Matthew Navarrete-Reyes in February.
According to police, Matthew was transported to Holy Cross Memorial Hospital on February 13 at around 4:17 a.m. after Reyes, 24, found him moaning and unable to support himself in his crib.
During an investigation, police learned Matthew had suffered multiple traumas in the weeks preceding his death. His parents told police the traumas came from several falls Matthew had in their home. Police said the couple did not seek any treatment for his injuries.
Reyes also told investigators that she struck Matthew Reyes in his mouth approximately four or five days before his death as punishment, according to police.
On June 11, the Montgomery County Chief Medical Examiner ruled Matthew Reyes' death a homicide. The cause of death was determined to be dehydration with oral trauma and pneumonia. The medical examiner also said the prolonged lack of medical addition to address a serious injury and the severity of the dehydration was evidence of neglect.
Three other male children, ages 3, 4, and 5 at the time of the incident, were removed from the couple's home and placed into the custody of child protective services.
In addition to the murder charge, Navarrette-Turcious, 30, and Reyes have been charged with neglect of a minor and two counts of child abuse. Bond was set at $800,000 for Reyes and $750,000 for Navarrette-Turcious.
The two are due in Rockville district court for a preliminary hearing on September 11.
