Authorities say a man was assaulted and robbed after he took a ride from three people he did not know.

The Daily Press reports Newport News police responded to a report of an assault July 1. When officers arrived at about 3:15 a.m., a 24-year-old man told them that he accepted a ride from an establishment in Hampton. Authorities say as the car drove off, one of the men inside the car pulled out a handgun.

Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston says two men inside the car told him to get out and walk toward an open field. The victim complied and was assaulted by the two men. The men then took his wallet and fled.

Further details haven't been released.
