Police were called to the location for the report of a shooting around 5:52 p.m. When they arrived, they found 17 year-old James Anthony Smith of Southeast, DC suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Smith was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

His family told WUSA9 in December that they believe the motive behind his murder were his cherry-red basketball shoes, Air Jordan 11 “win like 96” model. First responders found his shoes missing.

“I wish I never bought them,” his mother, Benita Smith, said in December. “They were an early Christmas gift. That’s all he wanted. He doesn’t ask for much, so I got them.”

Smith was a junior at Ballou High School working to get his grades up so he could go out for football in 2018. He aspired to go to college, according to his mother.

Friday, police arrested the juvenile suspect.

He is being charged with felony murder.
