A Maryland sheriff has called for all county schools to have bulletproof doors, metal detectors and X-ray machines.

The Capital reports Anne Arundel County Sheriff Ron Bateman' Thursday suggestions were in response to last week's shooting at a Florida high school that killed 17 people.

An Anne Arundel County Public Schools spokesman, Bob Mosier, says Bateman hasn't spoken with school officials about his suggestions. But Mosier says school officials are working with county police on potential changes.

Bateman says his recommendations would be costly; Mosier says retrofitting the schools with Bateman's measures would cost millions.

Bateman says safety solutions so far have been implemented in a "half-baked way." Superintendent George Arlotto has said safety measures include school resource officers, locked doors, visitor ID checkpoints, safety drills and security cameras.
