HUNTINGTOWN, Md. -- A woman has died after being attacked by a dog in Calvert County Thursday morning.

The dog was put down after attacking the woman and charging a trooper.

Maryland State Police said the trooper responded to the unit block of Cherry Hill Road in Huntingtown. That is where he found the dog attacking 28-year-old Jenna Rae Sutphin near her yard.

The trooper shot and wounded the dog after the animal charged toward him. The dog, identified as Dogo, was found nearby. Police fired and killed the animal in an attempt to prevent it from harming anyone else.

Sutphin was transported to the hospital in critical condition. On Thursday evening, police said Sutphin died at the hospital.

Sutphin lived with her fiance--a Prince George's County Correctional Center K-9 handler--and a breeding pair of large Dogo Argentino dogs, one of which attacked the victim. The dogs were pets and did not work with the officer.
