Campaign donations are pouring in for a long-shot political newcomer in a Maryland House of Delegates race after her opponent gave away an AR-15 rifle at a fundraising event Saturday.

"People are donating who don't even know me," said Allison Berkowitz who is running as a Democrat in a district famous for electing outspoken conservative Republicans.

Berkowitz says she has collected $6500 since Saturday.

Her campaign gained international news coverage after supporters staged a small demonstration outside the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire house in Harford County Maryland Saturday where Republican opponent Aaron Penman gave away an AR-15 rifle and nine other guns at a sold-out Gun Cash Bingo fundraising event.

"I don't believe this is a gun issue. I believe this is a mental health issue," Penman said during the event..

Penman is a Harford County Sheriff's Deputy and Marine Corps veteran.

Penman's campaign declined to say how much money was raised at the gun giveaway event.
