A man has been injured in a police-involved shooting in Maryland after he allegedly repeatedly punched an officer in the face.

The man was taken to a hospital with two gunshot wounds following the incident in Bladensburg Thursday morning. His condition was not immediately known.

The Washington Post reports that police said an officer stopped the man outside a liquor store because he appeared to be a "suspicious person."

Capt. Billy Sullivan, deputy chief of the Edmonston Police Department, said the man started fighting. He said the officer tried to use a stun gun on him, but it didn't take effect.

Sullivan said the man "kept punching the officer in the face." The officer "felt that he was going unconscious," then fired his service weapon.

The incident remains under investigation.
