Two men are dead after a shootout early Sunday. An off-duty state trooper intervened in a gunfight and shots were fired.

The two deceased men were identified as 27-year-old Michael T. Ward, Jr. and 21-year-old Jaquan M. Griffin from Salisbury, Maryland.

Police said two off-duty Maryland state troopers were working security at a restaurant at 2 a.m. when they noticed a large crowd gathered outside of a parking lot.

After hearing shots fired, one of the troopers called the Salisbury Police Department. The other trooper moved toward the parking lot.

Ward turned in the trooper's direction and fired shots. The officer returned gunfire.

Police said moments later, Griffin walked into the restaurant and collapsed on the floor. Police believe Griffin was fatally shot by one of Ward's bullets.

Griffin was transported to the hospital by two friends. EMS later transported Ward to the hospital. Both men were pronounced dead. The troopers were not injured.

Maryland State Police Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Units are investigating the shooting.
