One person is dead after a fire at a hotel in Capital Heights.

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. -- One person is dead after a fire at a hotel in Capitol Heights.

The fire happened at La Quinta Inn & Suites DC Metro Capitol Beltway located at 55 Hampton Park Boulevard, Prince George's County Fire said.

Fire officials said a person was found dead in the room where the fire started. No other injuries were reported.

“I actually thought someone pulled the alarm because there are several school groups staying here," teacher Nicholas Mendoza said. "So I figured it was someone messing around.”

Mendoza is a teacher chaperoning a middle school group from Houston. His first concern was his students.

“As soon as I opened my door there were all exiting, so it felt like a school fire drill," he said.

It wasn't until they got outside that Mendoza and his students saw smoke coming out of the top floor.

"We are just happy we are safe, that we could get everyone out," he said.
