WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A man is dead after a crash involving four cars shutdown part of the southbound lanes of I-495 late Thursday night, Virginia state police said.

The crash happened around 10:14 p.m. on I-495 at the 56 mile marker, according to authorities.

According to authorities the investigation shows that a Toyota Highlander was going south on I-495 in the center lane when it suddenly swerved to the right towards the exit for I-95. The Highlander then hit a southbound Jeep Commander driving in the right lane. After hitting the Jeep the driver of the Highlander suddenly came to a halt in the travel lane, police said. Police believe the driver got out of the vehicle and was not ejected from it, as previously reported.

A Dodge Caravan going south on I-495 was not able to come to a halt and hit the Highlander. The Dodge Caravan was then hit by a Lincoln Town Car, according to authorities.

Police said the driver of the Highland was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released yet.

Three people were taken to the hospital and were later released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
