A four-month-old baby girl was found dead in Gaithersburg Sunday morning, Montgomery County Police said.
Police said Brooklyn Ruth Irby was found in a parking lot near in front of the Motel 6 located at 497 Quince Orchard Road around 10:30 a.m.
First responders located the unresponsive infant and transported her to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Early investigations showed the baby girl was with family members in a car in the parking lot prior to the call.
Authorities are currently waiting for autopsy results from the Medical Examiner. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
The following statement was released by the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human services:
"The death of a child is a tragedy. We work every day to protect vulnerable children in the community and work with at risk families. As with any situation, the facts are continuing to emerge. Confidentiality laws prohibit us to releasing any information about those we serve. We will continue to work with law enforcement as the facts of the case are determined.
The County’s continuum of care (homeless system) includes three family shelters serving nearly 300 households annually. In addition, there are 14 beds at the Betty Ann Khranke Center (domestic violence shelter). In crisis situations, families may also be placed short term in motels. Our goal is to always assess families for risk and work to keep them healthy and safe."
This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
