An investigation is underway after a man and woman were found dead in the middle of the road Thursday morning in Frederick County, Md., according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to Acacia Court around 5:10 a.m. for the report of an assault. When the deputies arrived, they found a man and woman critically injured in the roadway. Both died at the scene.

Nearby investigators found a grey Chevrolet Malibu with its rear wheels up on a curb covered in blood. There was damage to both the front and rear of the car.

A man believed to be the driver was taken into custody nearby.

Witnesses said the man got out of the car and began running after they heard screaming and squealing tires around 5 a.m.

A cause of death for the victims has not been determined and investigators have not ruled out the possibility the victims were injured in an attack that occurred before the suspect got in the car.

The Frederick County Sheriff's Department has not released the identities of the victims nor the suspect.

A distraught man being interviewed by deputies at the scene said his adult daughter was one of the victims and that she does not live in the complex. He declined to provide her name.

"Preliminarily, it is believed that all involved were known to each other and we believe all those involved have been located," a statement from the Frederick County Sheriff's department said.

Deputies were called to the scene for a report of an assault in progress.

Residents of Acacia Court said the owner of the townhome where the incident occurred is out of town for a funeral, and that other relatives had been staying in the house.

"It's almost like a terrorist act," said neighbor Merick Meyers. "It's sad and gruesome and it makes me feel it was personal."

Residents said they heard a scream for help before the sound of squealing tires and a crash.
