DC Fire officials said one firefighter was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

WASHINGTON — Firefighters worked to extinguish a commercial building fire in Northwest D.C. just after midnight on Wednesday. DC Fire officials said one firefighter was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Crews were called to he 1000 block of U Street Northwest around 12:30 a.m. because of a fire alarm going off in a building there. When crews arrived, they found smoke and fire on the second floor of a two-story building in the area.

The fire extended through the roof of the building before firefighters were able to bring the fire under control. The injured firefighter was hurt at the rear of the building and treated by medics on scene before they were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. DC Fire has not provided additional details about the injured firefighter. No other injuries were reported.

The fire was eventually extinguished about an hour after crews arrived on scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Roads in the area were closed overnight, but have since reopened.
