Donald Trump used a large and boisterous rally in battleground Ohio tonight to try to turn the political page from a week of scandal and intraparty bickering.
“They want to keep us from talking about the issues. We will not let that happen. We will talk about the real issues which is jobs. And illegal immigration...”Trump told a crowd of thousands, listing off several other planks of his populist platform.
At the Ohio event, he used disclosures from a cache of stolen emails published by WikiLeaks to attack Hillary Clinton on a range of issues.
“The emails also show how the Clintons ripped off the wonderful people in Haiti, doling out favors to their friends and special interests,” Trump said.
At an early rally in Florida, Trump explained who he meant by “they” – a shadowy, globalist conspiracy of politicians, media elites and other “insiders” plotting to steal the presidency.
“This is a conspiracy against you the American people and we cannot let this happen or continue,” Trump said. “The corrupt political establishment is a machine. It has no soul.”
Trump used the afternoon event to rail against the women who have come forward this week to accuse him of sexual assault.
“These claims are all fabricated. They’re pure fiction and they’re outright lies,” Trump said.
Referring to the accusations he kissed and groped a People magazine reporter in 2005, Trump said if the woman’s claims were true she would have published them years ago. He also suggested the woman was somehow not good looking enough for him to have been interested in.
“Take a look. You take a look. Look at her. Look at her words. You tell me what you think,” Trump said. “I don’t think so. I don’t think so.”
On Thursday night, an attorney for Trump’s wife Melania sent a letter to People, demanding corrections to the report – but only about a few closing paragraphs in which the writer recalled running into a warm and friendly Mrs. Trump years later.
“The two are not friends and were never friends or even friendly,” the letter stated in part.
