For the past 20 years, the DC Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG) has helped 26,000 DC residents go to college. Monday, the Trump Administration announced it was ending funding for the program.
DC residents apply for the award, which is not merit-based. The program gives up to $10,000 a year to help students pay for public universities and colleges and $2,500 for private colleges.
DC-CAP said the impact could be huge. The nonprofit said without DCTAG, about half of DC students who would go to college won't -- just because they can not afford it.
"We're just all trying to make it, and that's one less person that makes it if they have to drop out," said Northwest, D.C. resident William Bogans.
The D.C. mayor has started an online petition to save DCTAG.
