More than 100 swing dancers surprised tourists at the Lincoln Memorial with a special performance Saturday afternoon.

The dancers broke out into a flash mob dance just after 1 p.m.

“It’s lots of fun because no one here knows what’s going to be happening. Hopefully people will be surprised," said Roger Plaut who organized the flash mob.

The D.C. area West Coast Swing dancers were among more than 6,000 worldwide.

The dancers used the same music and choreography and broke out into dance at the same time in 240 cities-including Brussels, Bucharest, and Boston-and in 39 countries.

“It’s exciting to have that surprise element and have people watch and see what we love to do,” said Lisa Verbalis, a dancer.

The DC West Coast Swing community is one of the biggest in the country.

The dancers want to raise awareness about the joys of West Coast Swing, and the many venues in the DC metro area.
