Peggy Cooper Cafritz, who created one of the nation’s leading arts-intensive high schools, and served six years as D.C. school board president, died Feb. 18 at a hospital in Washington.
She was 70.
Cooper Cafritz was often referred to as a grand dame of Washington arts and education.
"Duke Ellington School of the Arts is a testament to her life and legacy," said WUSA9's Lesli Foster.
