‘I’m very much outraged’ | 7 councilmembers call for DC school leader’s resignation

Councilmembers say parents and students have lost trust in DCPS Chancellor Antwan Wilson.

The number of D.C. city leaders calling for the head of the school district to step down grew on Monday.

A total of seven city council members said DCPS Chancellor Antwan Wilson needs to be replaced.

The city revealed Wilson broke policy by bypassing the school lottery process to transfer his daughter to another school.

Councilmembers Robert White, Vincent Gray, Mary Cheh, Charles Allen and Elissa Silverman said parents and students lost trust in Wilson.

“I’m very much outraged,” Monica Brokenborough said.

Brokenborough is one of the former teachers who blew the lid off of a graduation scandal at Ballou High School in 2017.

Some students were given diplomas despite missing three months of class.

Brokenborough said Wilson was alerted to the concerns but did nothing until the story hit the media.

The investigation led to an audit that revealed more than 900 students across the district should have never graduated.

Last week, the city found Wilson skipped the school lottery system to transfer his child to Wilson High School.

Wilson broke a policy he signed off on that banned public officials’ kids from jumping the line.

Deputy Mayor for Education Jennifer Niles resigned on Friday, but the mayor did not demand Wilson to step down right away.

“I do feel that DCPS does need a new leader,” Brokenborough told WUSA9.

“I had to make the decision on Saturday to call for Chancellor Wilson’s resignation,” Councilmember White said.

White -- along with four of his colleagues – said parents are frustrated, angry and have lost trust in Wilson.

“If we are going to improve and rebuild trust and numbers in our public schools, it starts with having a chancellor that the community and that parents trust,” White explained.

Councilmembers want Wilson to resign, for the school district to look at the numbers and find real solutions.

“You cannot rebuild without a foundation of trust, and unfortunately, Chancellor Wilson does not have the trust of the parents and students that he serves,” White said.

Brokenborough said mayoral control over the school district needs to be re-evaluated and more power should be given to the school board.

The former Ballou High School teacher also stated that teacher evaluations need to be reconstructed and made fair.

WUSA9 reached out to DCPS for a comment on this story, but the request was not returned Monday evening.
