'Heinous act' | Dog dies after left in tied-up bag outside DC adoption center

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — A living dog was left in a basket, double-bagged and tied shut outside a Humane Rescue Alliance adoption center in D.C. Now, the organization is trying to figure out who would do such a thing.

A note on the bag read “Dog pass A way. Thanks.” However, when shelter officials opened the bag, they found the dog was alive, but suffering from multiple ailments. She was left on the doorstep of the New York Avenue adoption center Wednesday evening.

The dog, since named Mary, was sent to an animal hospital. Later that night, veterinarians determined Mary could not be saved and she was humanely euthanized.

HRA is offering a $3,000 reward for anyone who helps identify the dog’s owner.

“We are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the person responsible for this heinous act” said HRA’s Vice President of Field Services Chris Schindler. “She was left to suffer and die a painful death. We hope this reward will motivate someone to come forward so that justice can be served.”

HRA’s Humane Law Enforcement division is investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to call (202) 723-5730.
