One of Thurgood Marshall Academy's brightest stars was killed during an attempted robbery in Northeast, D.C. Wednesday night.
Zaire Kelly, a senior, was defending himself with a knife during a robbery attempt. He stabbed his robber, and in turn the robber shot him, police said. Both died from their injuries. Police said Kelly was walking home from the convenience store.
Kelly was a track start at his charter school and was part of the College Bound Program. He was described as a good student who wanted to attend Florida A&M University.
Kelly was also a member of the Mayors Youth Leadership Institute and a former player with the Beacon House youth football program.
"He was going to college bound trying to get money for scholarships to go to college. Now people have to follow their dreams for him," said his cousin Savion Gallion.
