VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Search and rescue efforts were called off Wednesday for a teacher who went missing in the water in Virginia Beach, according to the Coast Guard.

Rabbi Reuven Bauman, 35, was attempting to save a 13-year-old student who got caught in a rip current near Little Island State Park on Tuesday afternoon. The student made it back to shore. Bauman did not.

Crews from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and Coast Guard Station Little Creek searched a total of 347 square miles.

The Coast Guard deployed crews from Elizabeth City, N.C. and Little Creek, Va. to search a total of 347 miles. A number of other officials, including Virginia Beach police and fire departments and the National Parks Service, participated in the search on land, air and sea.

The city of Virginia Beach had tweeted that morning about the high risk of rip currents, advising people to "check with a lifeguard before attempting to enter the water." Bauman went missing on a part of the beach where swimming is illegal. There were no lifeguards on duty.
