A 3-year-old boy is dead after being struck by a car in Alexandria, Virginia, Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at 4:45 p.m. in the 3900 block of Executive Avenue outside an apartment building.

Neighbors said the boy chased a ball into the road, then went back to get a sandal that had fallen off--that's when the car struck him.

The boy's parents drove him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police said the driver did stay at the scene and cooperated with police.

An investigation is underway. Police did not say if the driver will face charges.
