Alexandria SRO charged with firing service weapon inside middle school

School resource officer Carl Savoy is accused of firing his service weapon inside his office at George Washington Middle School.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - An Alexandria police officer has been indicted after an incident where he fired his service weapon inside a middle school. No one was hurt in the shooting.

Carl Savoy, 27, is a five-year veteran of the Alexandria Police Department. He was a school resource officer at George Washington Middle School when on March 13 he fired his weapon by accident inside his office at the school, police said.

After determining no one was hurt, Savoy contacted his supervisor and school staff.

On Monday, Savoy was indicted by a grand jury Monday for the incident and charged with two misdemeanors: reckless handling of a firearm and destruction of property.

Savoy has been on administrative leave since the incident. He is not receiving pay from the department because of the charges, police said Monday.

The maximum penalty on both counts is 12 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500.
