Maryland Speaker of the House Mike Busch is recovering from a liver transplant. His sister stepped up to give him the lifeline he needed.

On Facebook Thursday evening, the Anne Arundel County representative wrote that he noticed his energy didn’t bounce back after a brief hospitalization last fall. While trying to figure out what was wrong, doctors discovered Busch had liver disease from nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Doctors said the disease was progressing, so he went through with a liver transplant.

“Through the Living Donor Program at University of Maryland Medical Center, I am fortunate to be able to have the surgery quickly, thanks to my sister,” Busch wrote on Facebook.

Busch said he will continue to work while recovering and face this challenge like he does for the people in his district, “with determination and hard work.”

The delegate also looks forward to getting back on the lacrosse field with his daughters, jogging with his dog, and working for the people of Annapolis.

Busch has been a member of the House of Delegates since 1987. He has served as House Speaker since 2003.
