WASHINGTON (WUSA9) --Styrene foam is strong, reliable and cheep to get your hands on. It's used in everything from household goods, food containers, cups and plates and according to new research it may be more harm than good.

Not only is it bad for the environment but bad for your body as well. According to a new report from the National Research Council stating that they agree with the National Toxicology Program that styrene is "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen," based on sufficient evidence. Carcinogens are agents that cause cancer.

Although they note that there is "limited but credible" information for carcinogenicity in humans they have seen "sufficient" evidence in animals. However they did notice damage in human DNA cells that came into contact with styrene.

However polystyrene which is used in foam cups has been deemed safe by the FDA for over 50 years.
