Prince George's police officer arrested, charged with child abuse in domestic incident

Corporal Benjamin Lazic was off duty at the time of his arrest Tuesday.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. — A Prince George's County Police Department officer was arrested Tuesday following a domestic-related incident involving a child, according to PGPD officials.

Corporal Benjamin Lazic is charged with two counts of second-degree child abuse and one count of second-degree assault. The corporal was off-duty at the time of his arrest, according to police.

Lazic appeared in Anne Arundel County District Court for an initial bond hearing Wednesday morning. He posted the $15,000 bond and was subsequently released. The court and Anne Arundel County police said they would not comment further on active cases.

PGPD Chief Alex Aziz released the following statement:

“The charges against Corporal Lazic are troubling. If any officer breaks the law, on or off duty, that officer should be held accountable. We are fully cooperating with the Anne Arundel County Police Department as it investigates.”

The Internal Affairs Division of PGPD immediately opened an internal investigation in Lazic upon hearing of his arrest, according to the department.

Lazic has been with the PGPD since 2013 and is assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.
