The National Walkout Day comes exactly one month after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead.

Students walked out of class for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. to remember each life that was lost during the shooting.

WUSA9's Mikea Turner got the chance to speak with some students from Eleanor Roosevelt from Prince George's County who took part in the National Walkout Day.

With support from administrators and the county's public school system, Eleanor Roosevelt joined more than a dozen schools with plans to have students walk out of class Wednesday morning.

At 10 a.m. students headed to the track, behind the school, to rally with posters and chants. After 17 minutes, they got out of the cold and headed to the gym for a round of speeches.

A spokesperson for the county's school system says Superintendent Dr. Kevin Maxwell planned to be at a walkout at Oxon Hill High, where a student was shot inside a vehicle in the parking lot last month.

More than a dozen schools in the area are taking part in the National Walkout Day. While some students stayed on campus premises, others walked to the White House.

When asked why they were walking out Wednesday a freshman student from Blair High School replied that, "it could have been any one of us that Parkland shooting and that Sandy Hook shooting, so I think it's important for us to be out here for voicing their opinions, and just to get something done."

Here's a list of some of the schools that participated.
