Street parking is free on New Year’s Day in DC.
All trash removal will be happen the day after New Year’s Day and all other trash removal will slide to the next day as well for the remainder of the week.
All Smithsonian Museums, including the National Zoo, will be open. The Botanical Gardens, as well as all of the monuments will also be open.
Last New Year’s Day, the metro opened at 7 a.m. and remained open through midnight, with off-peak fares, but check WMATA’s website closer to New Year’s Day to confirm before traveling.
All city government facilities and the DMV will all be closed on New Year’s Day.
Grocery stores: Giant, Safeway, and Whole Foods will be open on New Year’s Day, although hours may vary by location.
Retail stores: Walmart, Target, Rite Aid, CVS and Best Buy will all be open on New Year’s Day. Costco will be closed.
