Make your list and check the lights twice. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning holiday decorators to take a few, simple safety measures.

They offered these tips to make sure your decorations down burn down the house:

  • Check Christmas tree lights for damage or fraying
  • Light sets should have a label that says they were tested for safety
  • Make sure to turn off or unplug lights when you leave the house or go to bed
  • Water your tree daily to prevent it from drying out

WATCH: See how fast your Christmas tree can go up in flames

The CPSC simulated a fire using a dry tree. Within seconds, the entire room went up in flames.

There are about 240 emergency room-treated injuries related to holiday decorating per day in November and December, the CPSC estimated.
