Are you ready to adopt a puppy? Below are some tips from Megan Flinn, Humane Education Coordinator with The National Humane Education Society:

First, do you have time for a puppy? You must have adequate time for training, i.e. House training, socialization, daily exercise and depending on the breed – you may be required to provide a great deal of exercise. A puppy under the age of 1 year should not be left alone or crated for more than 3 hours. In these formative months, it's crucial that someone is at home to attend to the puppy's needs. Before bringing a puppy home, do your research to determine the breeds and breed mixes that will fit your lifestyle.

It's never too early to begin training your puppy, and training is not optional. Start with basic commands, which are: sit, down, stay, come, leave it, trade, quiet, and off, establishing hand signals that go with each command. It’s best to master one command per week, making sure the puppy has mastered the command before moving on to the next. Training should be done in short, frequent intervals, with lots of praise and affection when they have followed the command. You don't want to overuse treats. For example, we might only provide a treat at the end of a training session.
