Teen shot walking home from school may not walk again sources say
17-year-old Ballou Highschool Junior is in critical condition after he was shot while walking home from school Thursday.
The incident happened one block away from Ballou High School in the 3200 block of 4th Street SE around 3:45 p.m.
Sources told WUSA9’s Delia Gonçalves the shooting stems from a neighborhood beef.
The student got into a fight a half a block from the school when he turned the corner and walked up 4th Street, SE a black sedan, possibly a Toyota Corolla with tinted windows pulled up. The driver got out of the car and shot the victim on the sidewalk.
Police said the student remains in critical condition, but sources told Gonçalves there is a question as to whether he will be able to walk again.
Seventh District Police Commander Regis Bryant said police have increased patrols in the area, but ANC Commissioner Paul Trantham said it doesn’t go far enough.
Commissioner Trantham is calling for more resources and plainclothes officers to patrol the streets of Southeast before the violence gets out of control.
Metro Spokesperson Dan Stessell confirmed Metro Forensics were called to the scene to investigate whether a Metro Bus security camera caught any images of the shooting or suspect vehicle. We’re told if anything is found, MPD will most likely disseminate those images.
