Sexual assaults on Fairfax trails spark investigation
Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred Thursday evening on a bike and walking trail near Waples Mill Road and Random Hills Road in Fairfax, Virginia. This latest incident joins several other recent reports of sexual assault along nearby trails in Fairfax.
The victim said she was walking alone along the trail at about 5:10 p.m. when a man grabbed her from behind and groped her. He left when a passing car spooked him. He was last seen running westbound along Random Hills Round.
The suspect is described as white, 18 to 30 years old, thin, and stands at about 5’8” to 6 feet tall. He has light brown hair, is unshaven, and was wearing jeans and a white t-shirt.
The victim was unharmed in the assault.
Police are now investigating if this latest assault is linked to others reported in which victims’ buttocks were grabbed while exercising along nearby Fairfax trails. In the past two weeks, five assaults were reported, typically occurring after 4 p.m.
Fairfax County Police urges runners to always go with a friend and to avoid poorly lit areas. They also discourage the use of headphones and suggest that runners switch up their routes frequently to avoid appearing predictable.
Victims of assault or those with information are encouraged to report to Detective N. Porter at 703-591-0966.
