She’s home! Mikea Turner is a morning reporter for Wake Up Washington. She is thrilled to be a part of the morning news team, covering stories in and around the place she grew up.
Before the Prince George’s County native joined WUSA9 in January of 2016, she was a multimedia journalist turned morning reporter, fill-in news anchor, producer and weather forecaster at WBOC-TV in Salisbury, MD. Yes, she did it all. While there she really immersed herself in the community digging up stories that mattered most to the people of Delmarva. Mikea will never forget the time she did a story about a man on a mission to raise money to build a small homeless shelter, one that could house an old high school friend who he pulled off of the streets. The day after Mikea’s story aired, she got a call that $40,000 in donations poured in overnight. Other memorable stories include coverage of news that made national headlines; a father and his seven children killed by accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. An interview with Civil Rights Activist Rev. Jessie Jackson on ways the community and police could improve relations was another big moment in her career.
Prior to WBOC-TV 16/ FOX 21, Mikea worked as a general assignment news reporter and co-anchor at Prince George's Community Television (CTV), a cable news station in Largo, MD. While there, she covered several stories, including the Washington Navy Yard shooting and both March on Washington events on the National Mall. She also provided coverage for Maryland's 2013 General Assembly in Annapolis. Additionally, Mikea launched a segment entitled, “ Inspirational Moments with Mikea,” which put the spotlight on Prince George’s County residents making a difference in the community.
Mikea attended Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey New Brunswick/ Piscataway, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism Media Studies. She minored in Japanese, a skill she first acquired at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD. While there, she hosted exchange students from Japan. Before she graduated, she visited the country and stayed with a host family. Mikea has a deep background in performing arts. She attended Thomas G. Pullen in Landover, MD from K-8.
