Melissa Nord joined the First Alert Weather Team in March 2016.
She holds the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation from the American Meteorological Society.
Melissa can be seen Saturdays and Sundays mornings on Wake Up Washington. She can also be seen weekdays mornings in SheeHy StormTracker 9 keeping track of the latest weather conditions around the area.
Before WUSA9, Melissa was the weekend morning and evening meteorologist at LEX 18 in Lexington, Kentucky.
She covered significant winter storms, flooding, and severe weather. Melissa got her start in home town of Atlanta, working at the Weather Channel as a weather producer and graphics meteorologist.
Melissa attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, one of the top public universities in the country, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. While in college, she interned at The Weather Channel, WSB-TV, and WAGA-TV. Melissa also had the opportunity to intern with the National Weather Service Office serving the Atlanta area, during which she worked on a collaborative research study to explore methods to increase warning lead time during severe weather events.
Melissa is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. She is an advocate for having more young women enter into STEM career paths and enjoys school visits to inspire students to stay interested in and excited about science and weather.
Melissa and her husband Ben have a cat named Emma. When not focusing on the weather, Melissa enjoys cooking, baking and spending time with family.
