Elon, NC (Sports Network) - A pair of free throws by Jack Isenbarger to
force overtime were key as the Elon Phoenix defeated the Western Carolina
Catamounts, 80-73, in Southern Conference action at Alumni Gym.
Ryley Beaumont was one rebound shy of a double-double with a team-high 19
points for the Phoenix (18-8, 11-3 SoCon). Lucas Troutman recorded 18 points
and four blocks, Sebastian Koch added 16 points and five boards as Elon won
for the third time in as many games.
For the Catamounts (11-16, 8-7), Tom Tankelewicz accounted for a game-high 23
points, Trey Sumler added 19 and five rebounds, while Preston Ross chipped in
12 points and six boards as Western Carolina had a three-game win streak
snapped.
Elon shot an impressive 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half, yet the
team led by just a single point at the break, 29-28.
Elon opened up the second half on a 7-0 run, but Western Carolina fought back
taking a two-point lead with 54 seconds remaining. Isenbarger tied the game
for Elon with 24 seconds remaining at 64-64, forcing overtime.
In the extra session, WCU was held to a mere 2-of-8 from the floor and 0-
of-2 beyond the arc, while Elon knocked down 3-of-4 from the floor, 1-of-1
from long-range, and 9-of-13 free throws, en route to the 7-point victory.
In a game that featured 10 ties and five lead changes, the Phoenix secured the
win by outscoring the visitors, 27-15, at the charity stripe.
