Riverdale, NY (Sports Network) - A layup from Emmy Andujar with five seconds
left in double-overtime lifted the Manhattan Jaspers to a 74-73 victory over
the Iona Gaels in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Association marathon at Draddy
Gymnasium.
Rhamel Brown had a massive game with 21 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks
for Manhattan (10-15, 8-7 MAAC) which has won four straight. Shane Richards
and Andujar added 15 points apiece and Donovan Kates chipped in 10 points as
well for the Jaspers.
Lamont Jones netted 17 points, Sean Armand and David Laury each tacked on 16
points and Taaj Ridley had a double-double of his own with 12 points and 16
rebounds for Iona (15-11). The Gaels have lost four of their last five.
At the end of a tightly contested first half Iona led 33-31 despite shooting
39.4 percent from the floor, by knocking down 5-of-11 from beyond the arc.
The second half had five ties and four lead changes. Andujar brought the teams
even, 58-58, with 39 seconds left on a layup and with both squads missing
jumpers in the final seconds the game went to overtime.
With the Jaspers down 65-63 with just over a minute left in the first
overtime, Brown ripped down an offensive rebound and was fouled on an ensuing
shot attempt. Brown nailed both free-throws and neither team scored in the
final minute setting up a second extra period.
The two teams traded leads back and forth for much of the second overtime
until Iona had a 73-71 lead with less than a minute to play. Michael Alvarado
got to the line for Manhattan with 11 seconds left but went just 1-of-2 from
the line. However Brown collected his final rebound of the game and six
seconds later Andujar scored the game-winning basket.
The game featured 11 ties and nine lead changes with neither team taking a
lead larger than seven points.
