(WUSA) -- A driver died at the scene of a car accident on southbound George Washington Parkway north of Mount Vernon on Monday morning. A passenger in the car suffered non life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital, according to U.S. Park Police.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. 

The parkway is closed southbound at Stratford Lane. Northbound traffic is being diverted to Route 1. The parkway will be closed for several hours.
