GAINESVILLE, Va. (WUSA) -- A speeding motorcyclist was able to get away after two Virginia State Police cruisers crashed during the pursuit early Tuesday morning.
According to Virginia State Police, a trooper on Linton Hall Road approximately 4 or 5 miles east of Gainesville clocked a motorcycle traveling 70 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone at approximately 1:30 a.m. The trooper then pursued the motorcycle, which had a passenger on the back, westbound on Linton Hall Road towards Gainesville.
When the trooper and motorcyclist approached Route 29, another trooper coming from the opposite direction tried to cut the motorcycle off. The motorcyclist, however, maneuvered around the blocking cruiser. The trooper who originally went after the motorcyclist was not able to stop and sideswiped the blocking cruiser in the driver's side at Linton Hall Road and Wellington Drive at approximately 1:40 a.m. The motorcyclist did not stop.
Virginia State Police say both cruisers were totaled. The scene was cleared at approximately 3:15 a.m.
The troopers only suffered bumps and bruises but were taken to Heathcoat Emergency Center for a check-up per protocol.
State police are trying to locate the motorcyclist. If you have any information, please call Virginia State Police at 703-803-0026.
