WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- You can relive the Summer of Love. The play "One Night With Janis Joplin" opens at Arena Stage. It's a tribute to Janis Joplin and blues singers who inspired her.
Mary Bridget Davies plays Joplin and we talked to her about the performance the Washington Post calls exhilarating. Davies said she often heard that she sounded like Janis Joplin, "It's always been like, 'you know what you should do?' I'd say, 'Janis Joplin. Yeah, yeah.'"
She says about the play, "Basically, the whole premise is you're spending an evening with Janis Joplin, one night. That's the name of the show. We're not just here one night. We're here for the summer."
Janis Joplin was influenced by blues music and the women who shaped her career are embodied by Serena Carton who performs the traditional versions of the song and then Janice takes over. Monologues are scattered throughout the play.
Joplin songs the audience will hear include "Piece of My Heart, Ball and Chain, and Bobby McGee."
Davis and the band played "Bobby McGee" for us on Friday morning. See part of the performance in the video.
