WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- A D.C. judge has sided with the Salvation Army in its efforts to evict The Spirit health and wellness center, a private for profit gym, founded by the Union Temple Baptist Church in Southeast, DC.
The Salvation Army says it's owed more than $170,000 on the fifth floor space, that it has been leasing to the gym.
Union Temple representatives say they had been trying to negotiate a payment plan with Salvation Army.
The six member staff and estimated 1,200 clients have been notified of the closing effective Tuesday.
The Spirit Health and Wellness Center is located on Martin Luther King Avenue, in Southeast. It's the Anacostia area's only private sport and health facility.
Anacostia is one of the District's poorest areas in both income and health.
