(Sports Network) - Suspended New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton may or may
not be under contract with the club next year.
Reports from both ESPN and NFL.com indicated that the NFL rejected an
extension Payton signed with the Saints in 2011 that would have kept him with
the team through the 2015 season. His deal is now set to end after the 2012
campaign.
However, since Payton is suspended for this season as part of the club's
bounty scandal, it has not been determined if his final year will carry over
to 2013 or if the contract will expire after this season.
NFL.com reported Sunday that commissioner Roger Goodell will make that
decision and has yet to do so.
Payton joined the Saints in 2006 and guided the franchise to its first Super
Bowl title after the 2009 season. He has a record of 62-34 with four playoff
appearances in six seasons with New Orleans.
