Moscow, Russia (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Samantha Stosur and former world
No. 1s Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic were among the quarterfinal winners
Friday at the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament.
Stosur cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Klara Zakopalova and will next face
Ivanovic in Saturday's semifinals after the fourth seed eased past fellow Serb
Vesna Dolonc, 6-4, 6-1.
Wozniacki, this week's third seed, needed three sets to dispose of defending
champ Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-1. The Dane will next
meet Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson, who took out the last Russian hope with a 6-3,
6-3 triumph over seventh-seeded Maria Kirilenko.
Arvidsson, who also prevented a potential a sweep of the final four spots by
the top seeds with a second-round upset of second-seeded Marion Bartoli, is
trying for her third career title and first outside of Memphis -- a tournament
she won in 2006 and earlier this year.
Wozniacki is 6-2 lifetime against Arvidsson, including wins in both meetings
this year. She is also gunning for her second title of 2012, having captured
the Korea Open just last month.
The last tournament titles for Stosur and Ivanovic each came late last year.
Stosur has been close to a win recently. She was a semifinal loser to Kai-Chen
Chang last week in Osaka and also lost in the Tokyo semifinals last month. The
Aussie star reached the Doha final in February and hasn't hoisted a trophy
since capturing the U.S. Open for her breakthrough Grand Slam title last
September.
Ivanovic, the 2008 French Open champ, hasn't won a title since last November
in Bali. Her best finish this year was a semifinal loss to Maria Sharapova at
Indian Wells in March.
Stosur and Ivanovic have split four lifetime meetings, three of which have
come in Grand Slams, but the two haven't played each other since Stosur won
three years ago in Los Angeles.
The 2012 winner of this $740,000 tournament will collect $122,000.
