Topper Shutt is Chief Meteorologist for 9 NEWS NOW and appears weekdays on the station's 5pm, 6pm, 7pm & 11pm newscasts, as well as throughout the day and night during all major weather events affecting our region. He also provides weather forecasts for WHUR 96.3 FM, and has since 1988. In early 2008, readers of washingtonpost.com's "Capital Weather Gang" voted Topper their favorite local weathercaster in a recent poll.

Topper joined 9NEWS NOW in September 1988 from W*USA 9's sister station WFMY-TV in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he was weekend weather anchor. Prior to WFMY, Topper was the weekday weather anchor for WTVK-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee, from 1984 to 1987. His first position in broadcasting was as weather producer and substitute weather anchor for CNN in Atlanta from 1981 to 1984.

Topper grew up in the Washington area and began forecasting the weather in the fifth grade. He graduated high school from Landon School in Bethesda, and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree in history from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He studied Meteorology at the University of Tennessee and at the University of North Carolina/Asheville. Topper earned the American Meteorological Society's Seal of Approval for both television and radio in 1988. Topper filled in for Mark McEwen and Craig Allen on the CBS network's "CBS This Morning" program from 1994 to 2000.

In 1992, Topper co-founded Automated Weather Source, a company that places automated weather stations in elementary schools throughout the Metro Area. W*USA 9 was the first television station to use this data on-air as part of the daily weathercast, beginning September 11, 1992.

Topper often speaks about meteorology at area schools, rotary clubs and appears as emcee at many other charitable functions. Topper lives in Maryland with his wife and three daughters. He enjoys being a dad, playing golf, skiing and, yes, forecasting.
