WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- The prize winning notification says you've won nearly $180,000 and there's a check to prove it.
But the Inter American Lotto Powerball lottery is just a scam.
The crooks use retailer names like Walmart, Kmart, Staples, Walgreens, Best Buy, Home Depot, Capital One, Sears, AmEX and others, to make their scheme appear legit.

It works like this, you cash the check, wire back half of the money through Western Union or Money Gram to pay taxes and fees.
The crooks tel you to wait for them to send you the rest of your winnings once the wire transfer is complete.
But, you'll be a real winner if do not respond, just shred the fake lotto letter and keep your money in your pocket.
