WARRENTON, Va. (WUSA9) --- Five volunteer pilots flew 26 rescue animals to Warrenton-Fauquier Airport, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. See photos of the take-off in the photo gallery.
Forty-seven volunteer planes flew over 400 pets from high-kill shelters around Hinesville, Ga. to airports in Virginia, New Jersey and Florida. The pilots participated in a "Flyaway" event organized by Pilots N' Paws, a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting animals out of high-kill shelters.
Pilots faced a foggy morning Saturday at Midcoast Regional Airport (Wright Army Airport) Ft. Stewart in Ga. Once the planes landed in Warrenton, Va., the pets went to assigned new homes or two area rescue organizations.
