WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The Secretary of the U.S. Navy spoke to media on updates from the Navy Yard shootings today.
Ray Mabus, the Secretary of the Navy thanked the first responders and staff at the hospital. "The victims have been receiving excellent care and have been brought to the right place," he said.
The Navy is working with the people affected on getting them home today and figuring out specific details on retrieving their belongings from their respective offices and getting them any additional help.
"Grief counseling is available now and... as we go forward to make sure that the trauma associated with will be dealt with appropriate," said Mabus.
The press conference was held at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center where three individuals were brought. An MPD officer has undergone several hours of surgery but is expected to make a good recovery. A woman with a shoulder wound is also currently in surgery and is expected to make full recovery, hospital officials said. In addition to this, a woman also suffered injury to her hand and head where the bullet did not penetrate the skull. She is also expected to recover fully.
